front porch tour

It was when I was thirteen years old, that I discovered what front porch sitting was all about in the South.  For a Summer road trip, my parents & I drove from Southern California to Tennessee.  It was the longest road trip in the whole entire world.  But also the most memorable of my childhood.  When we entered the great state of Kentucky on a Sunday afternoon, traffic was backed up for ever on the interstate.  So my Dad took some side roads to try to get us to our destination of Tennessee as fast as he could.  It was then, in the backseat of a 2 door Buick La Sabre that I saw what front porch sitting was all about.  Families were in their Sunday best, sitting on homemade cushions that sat on rocking chairs, porch swings or vintage gliders.  You could tell they all had fried chicken for dinner & they were watching all the traffic go by while discussing the week’s news.  It was true Americana, and I knew right then I was witnessing a lifestyle I had never known.  It was comfort at it’s best, all while they were sipping on sweet tea.  No one rushing, everyone just keeping the same pace as they rocked back & forth.
That entire Summer while we were in Tennessee I made it a point to sit & rock on as many porch swings & gliders as I could.  I was in love with the entire concept of a front porch.  ~ One that we never had growing up in California.
Fast forward many years later ~ the California girl now lives in Tennessee.  Not only does she live in Tennessee, but she owns a simple little house that happens to have the biggest front porch on her block.
God is so good.  ;)
If you’re new around here, you can catch up on our facelift for our small home by clicking here.  After showing you all the before & afters, along with the process of it all, I thought it would be fun to show off the front porch in a little more detail.  Pictures are worth a thousand words, so I’ll let them do the talking.

I couldn’t be more thrilled with the end results.  I wanted an eclectic style of furnishings new & old.  We tried to use what we had or what we found on craiglists or yard sales.  I’m rather partial to everything in this space of outdoor living.   After dreaming of a front porch for years, I finally have one.  Filled with rockers, homemade cushions & as much sweet tea as my heart desires.  - and that’s a lot of tea!  It’s an awesome extension of our home, one that will hopefully hold a ton of memories for many years.
