How to make a bow tie & matching belt

December 1, 2009 by Kellie

Need some darling accessories for your little boy or boys??? Making this bow tie & matching belt could NOT have been easier. Really. It will take me much longer to write this post then it did to make these two accessories. I have already started making a red gingham set for both boys for Christmas. You know I love my gingham. Anyways, here goes. Honestly, it is so simple.

Any ribbon to choose. For ease, I recommend getting the same width of ribbon for the belt, that is the same width of the canvas belting.

canvas belting. (They sale by the yard, approx. $1.27 per yard.)

glue gun & glue sticks (of course 🙂

needle & thread

scissors

elastic

2 d-rings

Starting with the belt, again so easy!

After getting all your measurements from your little man’s waist line. Cut the canvas belting accordingly. Leaving room to lap through the d-rings & for growth. Hot glue the ribbon to your canvas belting. Use a lot of glue.

After you have glued the entire side of the belting, wrap your ribbon around to the inside of the belt & glue approx 1/4 of the length of the ribbon around the inside. (When the belt is complete & you loop it through the d-ring you will want the loop side to have the coordinating ribbon as well.)

Then thread your 2 d-rings onto the belting and hot glue the folded edges together. Depending on how loosely you loop the canvas through the d-rings, you may need to stitch the sides together. (like me. next time, I wont allow for so much room.) AND YOU ARE DONE WITH THE BELT!

Now for the makings of the cutest bow tie – ever!

Loop each side of your ribbon together like you are making a bow. Loosely stitch the center together so it will gather as you pull it. Your stitching will be hidden by the center loop, so you aren’t going for perfection here. Tie your stitching off.

Next, with your same ribbon or coordinating ribbon, make a loop & stitch together. Again, the stitching will be hidden so don’t worry over perfection. (Obviously, I wasn’t worried. 🙂 Pull your loop over the bow & center it.

Take your piece of elastic & thread it through your center loop. ***When measuring your little guy for the length of elastic, I recommend measuring him with his dress shirt on. NOT with a bare neck.*** After you have ran your elastic through, stitch your elastic in place in the center of the loop to the bow tie. This will make everything stay in place, if you do these last few stitches. All I did was 3 stitches.

Then stitch your elastic together at the end. ***You could also use a velcro closure at this point, if desired.***

And presto!!! You have the cutest bow tie -ever!

This is my little guy, hours into a celebration, still wearing his bow tie. Still looking good. The shirt, well it is untucked, so you can’t see the belt. But trust me it’s there. And still looking good, after hours of playing, eating cake & cookies, and some picture taking.

Again, I promise this post took me longer to type then it did to make the bow tie & belt. It was incredibly easy & so cheap to make. I must say, I was thrilled with the results. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email or leave a comment. Tis’ the season for dressing up, and this will make the cutest little entrance for the little man or men in your life!!!
