Make a Holiday Menu Tray

November 6, 2010 by Kellie

I can probably tell you where I bought everything that’s in my house.  I love my stuff, I tend to get real attached, even if it’s waaaay out dated.  Being that I never want to be the outdated girl ~

Vintage = yes.  Outdated = no.
 Make a Holiday Menu Tray. Update old pieces around the house for pennies!

I decided to slap some {chalkboard} paint on & give a few pieces a sassy make-over before the holidays:  Trust me, everyone has seen this before (my ideas are not ground breaking or news worthy) but I do love a cheap make-over.  Especially if it involves *stuff* most of us already have around our house.

A terracotta pot, turned into a hostess gift, teacher, friend, or Sunday school gift.
We’ve all seen the chalkboard flower pot before.  It’s what’s inside that makes it even more fun.  In my opinion one of the best gifts in life is to watch things grow.
Forced bulbs = Paperwhites. .69 cents each
Reindeer moss or Spanish moss. Whatever you have on hand. {Love Reindeer Moss for the bright vivid green through the Winter.}
Dirt & Water.
Here’s how they’ll be in no time.  From Real Simple.  Love the idea of using jars.
Here’s my completed version.   So cheap.  Everything was on hand, other then the bulbs.
3 @ .69 cents each = $2.07.  Pretty good for a gift they’ll get to watch grow!

Next on the make-over:

 Of course I have a story about this metal/tin tray below….
It’s one of the first things I bought when I got my very own apartment.  Love this tray for that reason.  It holds sentimental value to me, because of the major milestone in my life.  It was cheap, it wasn’t really my style, but I loved the work & curves around the outside.
But it’s been sitting in our basement, because it is such a dated piece.  So I decided the tray needed an update too!
Did anyone noticed that I spelled Butternut Squash SOAP? oops. 😉
Holiday Menu Tray. Update old pieces around the house for pennies!
Here’s the completed look & updated accessories.  The only thing I bought for these 2 projects was the paperwhite bulbs.  Pretty good, huh?
P.S.  speaking of sentimental, Graham & I made our Fall wreath together last year.  All objects found in our yard other then 2 things.  Here’s the post.  The dried hydrangeas are even from the twins’ first birthday party.  {so happy to see it out of the box.}
Let’s pin together! Feel free to follow me on Pinterest if you love crafty stuff, DIYs, food, kids stuff & beautiful home decor.  All of that stuff makes me weak in the knees.  😉

    This is amazing how you changed the total look of your pieces. Also love your grouping. Now I’ve got to go get some paper whites and get busy.

I love that tray, I can think of 5 different places I could use it right now, hmmmmm, maybe that should be added to my list of projects. I remember reading about your wreath, loved it then and still do. You friend make my heart happy.

    Okay, seriously, yours is the FIRST chalkboard project that I have thought “oh! I totally want to do that!”. I have liked many of the other projects that I have seen, but these are ones that I want in my house, that I want in my hands as I walk to a friends door and present her with a gift! Thanks, they are great. I have the perfect tray to paint, and I even have the flower pots. I am not really crafty, but i sure do enjoy to see the great things that others come up with, but i can do this, Yay I am so excited!

    This is so lovely. Reminds me of the time I handed out gift bags with bulbs at a family reunion. Wonder how many of those daffodils are still blooming in someones garden.
    I am definitely keeping this in my inspiration file.

    I love the design of that platter – is it plastic? I cannot seem to find a shape or size platter to do the same with, but I do have an oval plastic one that is embossed. Hmm….maybe I will prime it first? Yours turned out nicely!
