painting & making a chevron curtain

June 13, 2011 by Kellie

I figured it was high time to jump on the Chevron bandwagon.  There’s been too much fun out in blogland over Chevron fabric, and to be quite honest…I was getting rather jealous.
So, I thought a curtain was in order.
Here’s our very small breakfast room before:
Of course, it’s the smallest room in the house (outside of the bathrooms) & it’s the room we are in most often.  I wanted to add some fun to the window, so I thought I would add a red & white pattern.
Well….little did I know, that I would not be able to find any red & white chevron fabric anywhere!  Ugh.  They were either sold out or it was the wrong red – etc.
So I did what any crafter/diy-er would do.  I decided I would make my own red & white Chevron fabric myself.
Jen from Tatertots & Jello told me about the medium that you mix in with regular paint & then it becomes a fabric paint.  So I thought I would give it a try…it worked!
I didn’t quite comprehend what I was getting myself into.  I mean all the measuring:
all the taping.  and more taping & more taping.
I had pieces of tape everywhere on me & in my bed.  But it was in the middle of this process, I started to enjoy it all.  After all, crafting is the cheapest therapy there is & being able to get involved in a project & only think about it, late at night, sometimes does the trick for me when it’s been just me & the kids.  If you know what I mean.
Okay…back to more taping:
Next up: your paint mixed in with the medium.  Ratio 2 to 1.
The above was another late night therapy session. (reason for darker pics, sorry.)
Then I started sewing them together once they had dried.
Leaving a small opening on each side to pull the curtain through, so it will be on the right side AND…to run my $2.50 Wal-mart curtain rod through.
Then hang your curtain, sit back & enjoy your new look.
HI!
It’s me…nostrils and all. 😉
I thought I would throw this little tip in with this post, that we (my mom & I) did before I had a blog & knew any better. That black fan, didn’t always look like that. It’s still super old & dated.
But this is what it looks like on the side that faces the ceiling:
The old rattan & faux wood stain had to leave. HAD TO! I just flipped them over & we spray painted the smooth side of the blades & hung them back up facing towards us instead of the other way.  I purchased the new light shades at Lowes’s to give the fan a quick, cheap update.  I realize it’s not the best, but at least we’ve reached the nineties in our quest to update our little house that could.  Since we live in the hot & humid South, a fan is still a must in our decor.
For mere dollars, this room has taken on a whole new look from where it was when we first bought our little house.  But that’s another story in itself.
Have a super week.
edited to add:
because i had a few questions, i wrote an additional post about the breakfast room ~ click here if you would like to read about the paint color for walls, more on the fan, the plates on the wall – etc.

That is so adorable! I’ve been thinking about making painted curtains or a rug… I just might have to try one like this for my very bare kitchen window though.

You did a great job! I love the red with your big red EAT. And great idea with the fan … I don’t think I would have thought to turn them over and paint them. You’d never know that was an old fan.

And I completely understand the need for the fan. I live in the south also, and though I love the chandlers people use to decorate, its just not practical for us. 🙂
