November 7, 2011 by Kellie

Hey all you Shabby Creek peeps!

I’m Kellie from Nest of Posies.  It’s a thrill to be over here at Gina’s today.  I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time now & it’s almost been a year since I was able to meet her IRL.  Boy, let me tell ya…she’s even better & sweeter in person.  Trust me when I say, she’s so real, so approachable & as you all know so talented.

Just in case you’ve never been over to my blog, right now I would probably describe it as a juxaposition of my life right now.  Kids, crafting, DIY-ing, glimpses of my handmade shop, instagramming & all my other whims & tales in life.

I can probably tell you where I bought everything that’s in my house.  I love my stuff, I tend to get real attached, even if it’s waaaay out dated.  But every so often I need to remind myself of a simple rule ~

Vintage = yes.  Outdated = no.

I decided to slap some {chalkboard} paint on & give a few pieces a sassy make-over before the holidays:  Trust me, everyone has seen this before (my ideas are not ground breaking or news worthy) but I do love a cheap make-over.  Especially if it involves *stuff* most of us already have around our house.

A terracotta pot, turned into a hostess gift, teacher, friend, or Sunday school gift.

We’ve all seen the chalkboard flower pot before.  It’s what’s inside that makes it even more fun.  In my opinion one of the best gifts in life is to watch things grow.

Forced bulbs = Paperwhites. .69 cents each
Reindeer moss or Spanish moss. Whatever you have on hand. {Love Reindeer Moss for the bright vivid green through the Winter.}
Dirt & Water.
Here’s how they’ll be in no time.  From Real Simple.  Love the idea of using jars.
Here’s my completed version.   So cheap.  Everything was on hand, other then the bulbs.
3 @ .69 cents each = $2.07.  Pretty good for a gift they’ll get to watch grow!

Next on the make-over:

 Of course I have a story about this metal/tin tray below….
It’s one of the first things I bought when I got my very own apartment.  Love this tray for that reason.  It holds sentimental value to me, because of the major milestone in my life.  It was cheap, it wasn’t really my style, but I loved the work & curves around the outside.

But it’s been sitting in our basement, because it is such a dated piece.  So I decided the tray needed an update too!
Did anyone noticed that I spelled Butternut Squash SOAP? oops. 😉
Here’s the completed look & updated accessories.  The only thing I bought for these 2 projects was the paperwhite bulbs.  Pretty good, huh?
P.S.  speaking of sentimental, Graham & I made our Fall wreath together last year.  All objects found in our yard other than 2 things.  Here’s the post.  The dried hydrangeas are from the twins’ first birthday party.  {so happy to see it out of the box.}
So, anyone out there thinking of what they can slap some paint on, real quick before the mad-dash of the holiday season starts?  Yep, I’ve got about 5 more projects in the works.  I honestly, love these weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.  Everything is focused on home.  One of my favorite subjects!
Thanks for having me over, Gina!  Hope you all have the merriest & brightest holiday season – ever!
xo
