raise our kids where the good Lord’s blessed ~ point our rocking chairs towards the west…

June 12, 2012 by Kellie

There’s a few requirements when it comes to porches, in my book.  You have to have rocking chairs, some sort of swing if you have room & a table or two for some chips & dip.
That makes a perfect porch in my opinion.
We live in a small older home.  Nothing fancy.  But it’s loaded with character.  One of the great perks of the house, is that we have a great size porch for the size of the house that it is.  The porch instantly drew me in.  It really was love at first sight when I stepped inside this house.
We’ve been slowly but surely working on some things around the house, and one of the main things this past week was getting these rocking chairs back up to being sassy once again.

Because they sure were ugly.
We purchased these rocking chairs, 6 years ago.  They’re big, bulky but oh so comfy.  They used to be a pretty wood stain finish, but not so much any more.  So instead of restaining them, I decided to use the outdoor spray paint by Krylon and paint them in a classic white.

I took this above pic with my Instagram app, but just to show it took all day to remove the stain & then prep them for primer.  Then prime.  I highly recommend using a primer if you’re going to spray anything that will be outdoors. I think you’ll get extra miles out of it that way.
After 4 cans of primer, and 6 cans of spray paint, my chairs were looking rather sassy!

I went back & forth in my head whether I wanted to stencil the top part with paint.  I love how the white finish looks on the wood.  I mean love it.  And I was scared to death of a permanent commitment of a stencil.  So my brain kicked in & I remembered that there is such a thing as outdoor vinyl!!!
So I decided to give it a try!  It’s not permanent & I can always remove it at anytime.  I used my silhouette machine & downloaded a group of doily cuts for .99 cents, which made it even better.  Not a permanent commitment to paint, and only a dollar spent.  Instead of purchasing a stencil.  It was a win/win.

I made the chair cushions & pillows.  The chair cushion fabric is from eBay.  It’s like outdoor awning fabric.  Similar to this listing here.
The pillow fabric is Waverly & I immediately fell in love with it when I saw it.  It’s kinda granny chic & brings all the colors in together.

There’s nothing like using your own elbow grease to make something pretty all over again.  That proud ownership thing starts to kick in ~ I love it when that happens.
It rained here today, like crazy – so that’s why my porch floor is wet.  The sun came out just for a bit to take some pics.  Next week, I plan on giving you all the full tour of the porch & our front exterior facelift.
Let’s just say, this is our new hang out, once again.
Raising our kids where the good Lord’s blessed
Point our rocking chairs towards the west
Plant our dreams where the peaceful rivers flows
Where the green grass grows.
*i tried my best to find a good Tim McGraw video to tag along with this post, but none of them are good on Youtube.  i wanted a close up one, you know with those jeans of his & that dark cowboy hat.  oh well, sorry girls!*

Oh, I just LOVE your chairs! Fabulous transformation! And I love the yellow glider! My grandparents had two on their front porch, all through my childhood, and I would love to find one in my thriftin’ excursions! 🙂 Great choice of fabrics, too! Such a happy looking place!

What makeover! I would never have guessed it would take so much paint though! It was well worth it! I love the mix of fabrics too – stripes and flowers always go well together and scream SUMMER!! Enjoy every minute on the porch with you hubby and kids!

Ahhh…one of my favorite songs. And I love what you did with the chairs, too. It was worth a project taking up space on the dining room table! 😉
