How to make a Posie and Rosette Cluster

August 26, 2014 by Kellie

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Kids are back to school & this Mama is finally starting to feel some inspiration coming on ~ as in all things Fall related!  So I thought it would be fun to share how I make my rosettes and posies.

I always feel so much more inspired in the Fall season.  I truly believe I am drawn to the change in wardrobe styles & the colors & texture of Fall.  The felts, leopard prints, rich velvets, satin and of course glitter.  Even though I personally believe every season needs glitter.  😉

I started playing around with exactly those fabric textures the other day, and decided to make some rosettes & posies.  You know to kick off Fall, and truth be told, I’m kinda known for my posies.  Um, hello – you know…Nest of Posies.  😉

How to make Posies and Rosettes using Velvet, Felt and Ribbon

How to make a Posie and Rosette Cluster using Velvet, Felt and Ribbon
One of the best things about making Rosettes or Posies is that you can use scrap fabric or ribbon.
No one will ever catch that your stash of plush velvet was wrinkled to the core,  or that you pieced together ribbon to make a rosette ~ because both the posies and the rosettes hide the imperfection.  The other thing about making a cluster is that you can always “buy” a pieces to mix & match in with your homemade pieces.  Which is what I did here.  That larger beige satin trim with a jewel is actually a lamp shade charm!!!
Use Scrap Fabric to make Posies and Rosettes
So grab your stash of fabric, ribbon or trim.
To start making your rosettes are posies.
hot glue your ribbon and fold in half to start forminig your rosette
Take your glue gun, and string a strand of  hot glue along the edges of your ribbon or fabric.
hot glue your ribbon and fold in half to start forminig your rosette
And fold in half so that your glue beads or fabric are touching the side against each other.

Then start rolling, gluing & twisting.  Repeat until you have a nice rosette formed.
Now for the Posies…
Cut your fabric or felt into strips of ribbon
Cut your fabric or felt to represent strips of ribbon.  I typically cut them in 2 foot strips.

It’s almost the same exact concept as making a rosette.
Place a strand of hot glue on one side of the felt.
Seal the sides together so that it looks like a string of ribbon.

Now you will need to cut the felt half way into the “strands of ribbon” about 1 inch apart.  I like to spread my cuts apart.  It makes for a “fuller” posie.  After you have cut your strands about an 1 inch apart bead another strand of hot glue – close to the edge & roll as you go!

If you bead your hot glue as close as you can to the edge – you will most likely not have to deal with hot glue showing through or dealing with a mess to clean up on the little rosettes or posies.  Just remember to roll it up as you move along while adding your hot glue.

My golden rules to follow when making these.
1.  Make sure your glue gun is nice & hot!
2.  Bead your hot glue as close to the opposite edge as you can.  So you wont have any messes.
