Merry Bright and Brassy

Merry Bright and Brassy.  Oh yes, I believe that describes me and this house to a “T” and perhaps the color black thrown in for good measure as well.  Since we just moved in over Thanksgiving week, the house is barely decorated for Christmas.  So don’t expect elaborate Christmas decor like you see in many homes online, we are just simple over here.  I’m letting my shiny new light fixtures or faucets be our holiday decor this year.  Because I realized we cannot do it all.  I knew our Christmas decor would have to be simple this year.  Which truthfully, turned out to be the best decision I’ve made in a while.  Because the house can speak to me while we are settling in without all the decor clutter that Christmas decorations tend to bring.  I get to soak in the metallic beauty from fixtures, freshly painted walls and see where it says to go next with our decor.

That may sound funny to some, but sometimes I really feel like you need to live in a house for a while to see what road you need to take when it comes to decorating.  Sure, you already know some pieces that you may want and the type of style you want to have.  But actually living in the house can help as well.

One thing I did know for sure, is that I wanted to make our entry way as grand as possible.  So when I checked out all the pendant lights from Lamps Plus, this one stole my heart.

It was love at first sight.

She takes the starring role in our entry way or foyer.  I haven’t decorated the walls, there’s zero furniture in here.

It’s just white, black & brass = my favorite combo!

Of course, I have big plans for this foyer.  Because as you walk into the foyer you see one blank large wall.  My thoughts are to make it like a “mud room” storage wall, but those plans will happen in the new year.

Our new Foyer Light

But what you do see is this perfect pendant!  Light & airy, bold & brassy, classic & understated.

She’s a beauty especially at night.  I love the pattern on the ceiling that she makes as well.

Below you’ll find the “before” of our entry when we first looked at our house that was a foreclosure.  It’s a bit blurry, but you’ll get the idea.  When you walk in the front door, you can go right or left.  To the living room or the master bedroom.  It wasn’t that the light fixture was all that bad, honestly.  It was just dated to me and my personal taste.  The tile floor was so cracked, leaves had blown in over the years of the house being vacant for 4 years.  We also had to change out the door and side lights because the wood was rotting.  And we also gave it a fresh coat of paint.

And here’s how it looks right now…

I’ll call it the “middle transition” because it’s not the “after” – yet.

And here’s what the entry looked like when you were headed to the left when you walked in the front door.  It leads to our master bedroom that used to be the garage.

Here’s a peek inside of what we’ve been able to do so far.

I don’t have a bed skirt yet, and I cannot decide what I want to do for our bedding.  So I’m waiting.

Master Bedroom
You step down 2 steps (like you would if you were walking into a garage in most homes) because it was a garage.  This is the only room in the house that has drop down ceiling tiles.  I honestly used to hate them, but we painted the tiles and now I really like the texture they bring to the room.  I hardly notice them now.   This room is so big & spacious.  We had the floors sanded and re-stained.   I believe the floors are my favorite part.

Merry & Plaid Master Bedroom
I went with easy decor, and basically bigger sized pieces that would make a statement, since our house is barely decorated at all, let alone for Christmas.  You can get your own downloadable file of the Names of Jesus, like what’s on my dresser by heading here.  It’s free & makes a great decor statement.

This handsome fellow happens to be another great decor statement, as well.  He’s my constant shadow.  😉

Shady
Here’s another look, this time standing in our living room.  We replaced the broken and damaged tile with leftover wood we had from our Sunroom/Kitchen flooring from Build Direct.  It was unfinished wood so we were able to have the new flooring and the original stained the same color.  I was holding my breath hoping we had enough.  One of my friends had the great idea of turning the wood to lay the opposite direction of the living room and master bedroom flooring, which are the original wood floors.  Because it was already going to look slightly different since we ripped up the damaged tile, and also since we didn’t have a lot of long pieces leftover.  It turned out to be a genius idea!

Living Room and Foyer
I positively love how it is all one flooring and color now.  Add the glossy black door with the brass pendant, I still can’t believe this house is mine & how far we’ve come!   (This above picture was taken before me moved in our bedroom furniture back there.)

And lastly, I thought it would be fun to share how our door & entry looked from the exterior when we first purchased our home.

Front Door to our new house

Below is how it looks now.  The pendant light makes the house all aglow from the outside as well.  Even though you can’t really see it because it’s center with the door on the inside, you can feel the comfort from the glow it gives.  And that might be one of my favorite parts…feeling the comfort from the glow that is slowly but surely making this house a home.
