Decorating with Color

August 27, 2015 by Kellie

This post is sponsored by Jonathan Louis for Macy’s.

You know that feeling when you’ve worked so hard for something you appreciate it so much more?

I am full of appreciation over here.

Full.

I’ve been saying it to myself for a while now, “I can’t believe we are finally at this point.”

We purchased this home a year ago.  It was a foreclosure and had been vacant for 4+ years.  Nothing has been easy here.  Nothing.  But I’m not complaining.  I’m just appreciating the journey even more.  We knew it was going to be a challenge, but probably not as much as we thought.  This room (our open floor plan kitchen and sunroom/family room) is what sold us on this house.  It is also the room that has eaten away at our bank account and emotional levels.  This room was an add-on that the previous owner did.  All I can say, is that newer isn’t always better.

Their vision for this room was amazing, but the actual building of it, not so much.

But again, I’m appreciating the journey.  Because let me tell you…

Decorating with color
We’ve come so far to get to this point.

We moved in the week of Thanksgiving last year, and we had zero furniture for this room.  So we sat on gravity camping chairs for months.  The kitchen wasn’t finished, I didn’t have a stove.  All I had was a crock pot and a microwave but I knew we could do it.  This picture below (bad phone picture) is the week we moved in.  Little did I know that week of Thanksgiving we would all get the flu and the weeks that followed were painful with all sorts of constructional issues that would pop up.

Our house was getting used to having people living in it again…

But now…here we are…

Accessorizing a Room with a Sectional
This is the very same room and the one we live in the most.

TV watching.

Homework.

Cooking & Eating.

Laundry.

Even stinky shoes from football practice enter this room.

Wet umbrellas.

We truly live in this room.

I knew I needed practical furnishings and elements that would stand up to a young busy family for this room.  Because it would see high traffic all throughout the day.

Tricks and Tips on how to decorate with Color.
Decorating a room around a Blue Velvet Sectional
When we were looking around for a sectional, I knew I wanted it to be a darker color so it could stand up against my 3 kids, my husband, and lets face it our dog.  I had always dreamed of a deep blue velvet sofa, so when I saw that Jonathan Louis made one for Macy’s I immediately was drawn to it.  They of course make it available in several color options and styles which are all available online or in select stores of Macy’s.  You can even custom design your sectional, since they offer it in a modular seating.  With our room being an open floor plan, and rather large we knew we could handle a large sectional.  But you can customize it to fit any room style.  They also offer single sofas, or apartment sofa as well.

Open Floor Plan Kitchen and Family Room with Pops of Color

We painted our walls white, which some thought I was nuts to do all white, but I knew my love for color would bring this room “alive” against the white walls.  Decorating with color is a something I love to do.  When it comes to decorating or trends for the home, there’s neutral trends and of course color.  I happen to love when neutral and color start dating each other.  I love all of my foundations (walls) permanent fixtures to be neutral.  It’s least expensive that way as well.  But when it comes to adding color, nothing is off limits as long as YOU love it and it flows.

We really thought about ordering this sofa in a gray, because it is beautiful, but in the end this deep blue velvet fabric won.  3 cheers for color!  And I must say, I have zero regrets.

If you’re curious, you can read how I went about planning this room on this post.  It’s rather amazing how it has all come together.  I also share my inspiration photos in this post as well.   Here’s my mood board during my planning stages:

Throughout the past year of us owning our #newoldmtnhome I have visioned how this room could coordinate with the seasons.  Because other than the kitchen area, this room is all windows and doors.

The outside is truly part of it’s decor inside.

So having a bold furniture piece that would flow with the view outside was very important to me.

I felt I could have prints or geometrics patterns on my pillows, but just like my white walls, I wanted my fabric on my sofa to be solid and a good place to coordinate any color story that I wanted, depending on the seasons.  Jonathan Louis offers many gorgeous fabrics in prints or solids for their furnishings.  They also make chairs and bedroom furniture, all of which offers their elite fabrics options.

Decorating and accessorizing with color
Deciding on a major piece of furniture is always hard.  You keep your family in mind, you consider the ages of your kids, you want to try to keep true to the styles you love, but you also have to have a reality check with the way your family lives.

For us, nothing is off limits for my kids.

We live in this room.

Cartwheels happen in here.

Even ball throwing (which I do cringe when that happens with these windows!!!)

Even smelly feet are a part of it.

My most favorite accessory of all.
But by far my most favorite accessory that this room and this couch will hold are the memories that will be made in here.  This couch and this room will be elements in what my kids will hopefully hold dear for the rest of their lives.  Having a place for all of us to sit and talk, cheer on our favorite team, watch Luke Skywalker defeat Darth Vadar,  play our favorite video games, observe the seasons from the windows and watch the snow falling will all happen on this couch.

And that my friends, is my most favorite part.  We made room for dreams and life to happen.
