a Star Wars birthday cake

May 12, 2011 by Kellie

This is a post for ALL the boy moms out there.
All boys love Star Wars, as our guest poster Jenna writes below.  I can definitely second that statement.  I can’t believe what she was able to do with a little DIY imagination.  I can only imagine how her little guy reacted when he laid his eyes on this cake!
So let’s cue the Darth Vadar music & start his breathing sounds, because we are about to discover how to make a R2D2 cake from Star Wars!

I’m Jenna from SAS Interiors. My website and blog is all about Interior Design, so it was fun to break away from the ‘norm’ and change it up a bit today by sharing a fun R2D2 cake that I recently made. Thanks Kellie for having me here!

What boy doesn’t LOVE Star Wars?!

My son’s 5th birthday was a few weeks ago, and he asked me to make a Star Wars cake. At first I had no idea what I was going to make, and then it hit me ~ R2D2.

I have no real cake talent, so honestly, anyone can make this…it was fairly easy. My inspiration for the project was this….
…and it worked perfectly to help with the proportion, the colors, and the detailing.
Supplies:

  • 1 – 8″ round cake pan
  • 1 – 8″ x 8″ square cake pan
  • 2 boxes of cake mix ~ I used vanilla
  • 2 containers of vanilla frosting
  • blue colored food dye
  • a small paint brush and a little bowl
  • a knife

Prepare your cake batter according to the box instructions OR you can make batter from scratch. The square cake pan will definitely hold one box of batter, but you may have some batter left over from the round cake pan. Throw it away or make something else.

1. Bake your cakes (according to the instructions) and let them cool.

Once your cakes are completely cool, you can start making the form of R2D2.
2. Cut the round cake in half.
3. Cut about 1-1/2″ off two sides of the square cake. Slide the two cut pieces down the plate about 2″
4. Put one of the circle halves at the top of the square piece and trim, so they are the same width (as seen in the picture below).
It’s time to make the feet.
5. The feet are trapezoid shaped, so using the leftover half circle, cut out feet to look like the inspiration. Then cut a rectangular piece for the third leg under the large rectangle. The picture below tells it all ~
Icing Time!!
6. Frost the entire cake, except the head, with white icing.
7. R2D2’s head is a gray color. I separated a little bit of icing and using food dye, I made a grayish color.
To make a smooth finish, dip the knife into a glass of water and gently spread it on ~ NICE…it’s coming along!
At this point, I stopped (it was 11pm the night before the party ~ I was exhausted) and let the cake sit overnight so the frosting had time to slightly harden.
(Next Morning)
8. I squeezed some blue colored food dye into a bowl and using a little paint brush, I carefully and slowly started creating the R2D2 detailing by brushing it on the icing.
It took some time, but it was fun! Using the inspiration really helped. It doesn’t have to be exact/perfect…it’s homemade — lumps and bumps are expected.

DONE! Ready to dig in!!

Some more detailing:
For the red dots on the head, I used a few colored sprinkles
For the black lines on his body, I used some black decorative icing
For the 3-D dot on his head, I used a clump of icing and shaped it like the inspiration
And that’s it…pretty easy, right?!
Thank you so much Kellie for allowing me to share this project on This Blessed Nest. I’d love for all of you to stop by my blog, SAS Interiors where I’m dedicated to showcasing simple, affordable, and stylish interior design solutions and ideas for everyday living! xo Jenna

Very cute. I have been asked to make a Jake and the Neverland Pirates cake. Oh sure. No problem. With all my cake experience (my Mom’s Day cake fell apart).

Their latest obsession is Spiderman. That might be easier.

You did an awesome job on this cake! I’m so intimidated by cake crafting! I tend to fall back on cupcakes.

I stumbled onto your blog doing research on my sons Star Wars Birthday. I was a bit intimidated to make the cake myself with all I had to do that day but I am totally impressed with the way yours turned out. Great job.
