All Mama wants is a Silent Night.

December 15, 2013 by Kellie

First off, if you haven’t had any sleep in a few days, let me give you a virtual hug.

I so get it.  I really do.

Once upon a time, I had twins, plus I had a 2 year old, all at the same time.  But that’s really all I can remember about those days, because the lack of sleep was so real.  My husband travels for a living.  It’s how we pay our bills.  So the lack of sleep was a real struggle for me.  Heck, who am I kidding, it’s still real, but not nearly as bad.  I was a walking zombie.  With spit up in my hair & milk stained t shirts, and having a bad hair day everyday of the week.  It was my normal attire.

But you do what you have to do to survive.  And we did.  Our house suffered tremendously, my social life was CNN & the Sprout Channel.  My day was made with a large sweet tea & a venti coffee all in the same hour.

The highlights of my days would be when my kids would fall asleep on the sofa & I would sneak & get something fun to eat, a cookie, a piece of candy ~ hoping they wouldn’t wake up.  I would sneak in our pantry & just enjoy the peace & quiet for a few seconds…and when I was about to take a bite of the moist, delicious center of the cookie  – one of my kids would start screaming or crying.

It never failed.

All Mama wants is a Silent Night - how to make a glitter & sharpie mug

So I had this idea for like for-ever in my head.  To make a coffee mug with this saying.  I’m sure you all have seen the sharpie mugs around everywhere.  This technique isn’t really new.  But sometimes, you just want to make one for yourself – or make one for a friend that just had a baby, or for FUN Christmas gifts.   Gosh, to think back in the days when I had just become a Mom & didn’t know a thing.  My-oh-my how things have changed in this house.

How to make a glitter mug

My sweet friend Ann Marie (who happens to be a Mom of 4 very young kids) has the best tutorial on how to do the glitter for your coffee mug. When she first made her glitter mug, I was absolutely in love with it!  I put it on my list of things to make for myself.  Then…I thought why not combine my saying with her idea of using the glitter on a mug.  So head over to Ann Marie’s blog (White House Black Shutters) to get the full scoop on how to make a glitter mug THAT WILL STAY!!!  But you’ve got to use Martha’s products.  Yep, something about them that makes that glitter really stick!!!

PLUS, IT’S DISHWASHER SAFE, but you’ve got to follow Ann Marie’s tutorial.
Now for the writing…I’ve seen 2 different tutorials.  One of which you need to clean your mug off with rubbing alcohol, use a sharpie & write your message.  Then bake it in the oven for 30 minutes at 350*.  (For this step you would need to do this process FIRST before using the glitter.)
The other tutorials I’ve read is that you can write with your sharpie & use mod podge over your message, and allow your mug to cure for about a week.  It’s totally up to you & what you choose to do.

I shared this photo below on Instagram the other night.  The house became quiet, the toys were actually all cleaned up, I was able to vacuum a couple of hours before bedtime, I was by myself & enjoying the tree, the lights, the calmness…

All is Calm, All is Bright

And wouldn’t you know about 10 minutes after I took this photo, here comes the pitter of patter of feet coming down the hallway.

“Mommy, I don’t feel to good…and then…vomit was everywhere.”
